Lady Cardinals take down Carthage 5-4 in penalty shootout

CARTHAGE, Mo. -- A lightning delay didn't stop Lady Cardinals Soccer from earning a nail-biting victory against Carthage. The team took down Carthage 5-4 in a penalty shootout.

The team had 7 total shots on goal, with Avery Pogue leading the way with 4 shots of her own.

Addi Brown also had a busy night, racking up 6 saves for the team.

Both teams were tied at nil a piece as they went into extra time. Sammy Galardo, Avery Pogue, Dakota DeGraffenreid, Avery Allen, and Gabby Stodhill were able to convert all of their penalty kicks in the penalty shootout to secure the victory. Carthage converted their first 4 attempts, but were unable to convert on their last attempt after the shot hit the crossbar.

"I was really proud of our intensity and grit tonight.  After a tough close loss Tuesday, I thought the girls responded well and came together as a team and battled hard against a good Carthage team," said coach Justin Boudreaux. "I thought the poise of the 5 penalty kick takers was crucial as well.  After a hard fought game it's difficult to slow your heart rate and breathing and prepare for those.  All 5 of those girls stepped up and did their job."

Boudreaux added, "We'll continue to ride that momentum into this weekend where we will see two very good teams. We're hoping that playing teams of this caliber will bode well for us as we head into the home stretch and prepare for districts and beyond."

With the 5-4 victory, the Lady Cardinals improve to 5-4 on the season.

The team returns home Friday for a two day stretch in the Southwest Missouri Shootout. Webb City plays Jefferson City at 11 AM Friday, and Columbia Hickman Saturday at 1 PM.
