A blocked field goal returned for a touchdown late in the game fired up the home crowd but a last gasp drive ended near midfield as the clock expired on a 20-14 loss to the Ozark Tigers.
After a long kickoff return, the Tigers struck first on the opening drive for a quick 7-0 lead. The remainder of the first and most of the second quarter found the teams trade six punts and two turnovers as the defenses controlled the game. Late in the half, the Cardinals struck back in a quick way. On the third play of the drive, Mason Williams took the ball off the right side and 53 yards later crossed the goal line to get the Cardinals even. The half time score - Webb City 7 - Ozark 7.
Ozark grabbed the lead back on their first possession of the second half after the Cardinals were forced to punt. Then on the very next series a fumble by the Cardinals was picked up and returned for an Ozark score. The PAT was blocked and the Cardinals were facing a 20-7 deficit.
The Tigers used six clock killing minutes before their fourth quarter drive stalled at the Webb City 19 yard line. An attempted field goal was blocked by Brody Eggleston which Andrew Young picked up an ran back 81 yards for a touchdown and just like the Cardinals were back to within one score at 20-14.
An unsuccessful on side kick gave the ball to the Tigers at midfield with just less than four minutes on the clock. The defense then rose up and forced the Tigers into a three and out with only 56 seconds coming off the clock. Taking over at the their own 29 with 3:05 on the score board, the Cardinals had the chance they needed. Two quick first downs put the ball near midfield but the drive ended as the clock showed zeros.
Mason Williams led the ground game with 85 yards on only four carries with one touch down. Jackson Lucas was 8-14 passing for 97 yards, Andrew Young caught three of the passes for 42 yards.
Webb City will celebrate home coming next week as the take on Neosho.
