Cardinals race into championship of the Raider Classic

Webb City will play in their eighth consecutive championship game at the Frontenac tournament after dispatching Nevada 68-36 on Friday night.

To visualize the game with Nevada, one would only need to compare it to watching the cars runs at MOKan.

The first quarter was the initial burnouts.  Lots of noise and smoke but not really going anywhere.  The teams combined to shoot just over 25% (8-29), committed seven turnovers and was whistled for 10 fouls.  But as the quarter ended and both cars came to the line, Webb City hit the gas just as the light moved to green and a corner three from Holden Johnson as time expired jumped the Cardinals out to a 14-11 lead.

The second quarter was the first hundred yards.  You could tell who had the strongest car and was the favorite to win if no trouble occurred down the stretch.  Webb City's tires hooked up as they shot away from the line with a 13-5 burst to open the quarter.  After Nevada scored the first two points of the quarter, Holton Keith (held to only two points in the first) hit three consecutive shots.  Another basket from Nevada was answered by a three from Eli Pace and another Keith basket as the Cardinals were now up by ten points.  Going into the locker room, Webb City led 35-24.

The second half for Webb City was all gas - no brake whereas the Tigers engine went up in smoke.  An 8-0 run, fueled half and half from four points each from Keith and Pace, forced the Tigers into an early timeout.  From their the Cardinals only needed to hold it together and reach the finish line.  Pulling away in the third quarter, Webb City outscored Nevada 13-7, forcing the Tigers into 11 turnovers over the eight minute stretch.  Keeping the foot on the gas, the Cardinals built a 30 point lead before pulling the shoot early at the two minute mark getting some younger players into the game.

Overall, the second half numbers for the Cardinal defense were outstanding.  Limiting the Tigers to only 12 points on 4 of 14 shooting and forcing them into 22 turnovers.   For the entire game, the defense was credited with 20 steals, the third best team total in recorded history.

Holton Keith (26) and Eli Pace (15) combined to outscore the Tigers on their own.  Trae Turner added nine on 3 of 4 shooting from both the field and the free throw line.  He was the team leader with seven steals in the contest.  Mason Young, in his first varsity start, grabbed a team high nine rebounds.

The Cardinals will face the Putnam City Pirates in the finals.
