Webb City falls in district finals

Webb City falls in district finals

A fast-and-furious first half was followed by a defensive-heavy second half and saw the Neosho Wildcats claim the Class 3 District 12 title after defeating Webb City 3-2 on Thursday at Carl Junction High School.

Webb City's season comes to an end with a 10-16 record.

"I couldn't be more proud of the boys for the work they put in this season and in districts," Webb City coach Nick Harmon said.

"Tonight, it just didn't seem to fall in our favor, particularly in the second half."

Neosho came out aggressive with three shots on-goal over the first three minutes, but it was Webb City that struck first on a Neosho own goal in the seventh minute of play to put the Cardinals up 1-0.

Webb City went up 2-0 in the first half when Manuel Cornelio found the back of the net in the 26th minute.

The Wildcats came roaring back at the end of the first half when Edly Lihpai found the back of the net off the assist from Angel Alvarado in the 32nd minute to cut the lead to 2-1.

Gabriel Zapete tied the game up after beating the goalie in the 37th minute off the assist from Yahir Ruiz, sending the match into the half at 2s.

The second half saw less goals, but just as much intensity. The Wildcats had a chance to take the lead on penalty kick by Lihpai midway through the second half, but Webb City goalie Noah Mitchell made a diving save to his right to preserve the tie.

"That's just a fantastic goaltender stepping up and making a play," Harmon said. "He has been a guy that has come a long way this year. He let his instincts take over and he made a play."

Neosho was awarded a second PK in the 67th minute and Ruiz made it count, finding the back of the net to give the Wildcats the lead for good.

Neosho goalie Kayden Wood finished with 13 saves, while Mitchell had seven saves.
