Valiant effort comes up short, Cardinals season ends with 62-52 semi-final loss

For the first 12 minutes of Saturday's district semi-finals, Marshfield lived up to its top seed. Both teams started slowly offensively, but after being tied at 5-5, the Blue Jays rattled off the last 14 points of the first quarter taking a 19-5 lead at the end of the period.  Threatening to run completely away from the Cardinals, those 14 points were only the beginning of a 21-3 run, pushing the Blue Jays out to an eighteen point lead midway through the second quarter.

It was then that the young Cardinals setttled down and began chipping away at the deficit.  Scoring the last six points of the half, the final four on back to back steals and layups from Abby Sargent and Whitlee Keith, Webbb City pared the deficit back into single digits, 33-24 at half.

Still trailing by the same margin half way through the third, the Lady Cardinals put up a furious 8-0 run to get back to within a single point.  Foul trouble and the energy spent on the rally then became apparent when Marshfield quickly put up the next seven points and reestablished their double digit margin in the middle of the final quarter.

The stat line showed both teams very close in most categories.  The difference was at the free throw line.  Marshfield made 11 more free throws on the day.

Abby Sargent finished with 22 points and Adalyn Maxwell 10.  Maxwell grabbed a team high seven rebounds as the shorter Cardinals actually out rebounded the Blue Jays, 32-27.

Finishing with the most wins in the last 10 years, the Cardinals will have to replace the senior leadership of Kirra Long and Jenna Schulz next year.
