Cardinals build early 10-0 lead, hold on for 12-8 win over Marquette

The Cardinals, scoring six times in the first and holding a 10-0 lead after they batted in the top of the fifth, withstood a spirited comeback attempt by the Mustangs to claim a 12-8 win on Friday night.

By the time that the Mustangs could record their first out, the first seven batters had reached base safely to start the game for Webb City.  The Cardinals had already scored four times on four base hits and drawing three walks.  When the inning was finally over, Webb City had sent 10 hitters to the plate and found themselves leading 6-0.

Webb City scored twice more in the second and fifth innings in building their 10-0 lead.

Starting pitcher Landon Fletcher cruised through his four innings of work, allowing only three hits while recording 8 strikeouts.  The Mustangs offense began to stir in the fifth following the exit of Fletcher.  Marquette used two walks and three singles coupled with a Cardinal error to score four times in their portion of the the fifth inning.

Webb City was able to weather another two runs in the Marquette sixth that closed the lead to 10-6.  Both teams scored twice in the seventh inning for the final score.

Sam Weller reached base safely in each of plate appearances, going 3-3 with a double, drawing a walk and getting hit by pitch, scoring 4 runs.  Christian Brock also recorded three hits.  Andrew Young, Drew Vonder Haar and Shadrach Salazar each finished with two hits.  Shaun Hunt scored three times.  As a team, Webb City finished with 15 hits and were helped out by four Mustang errors.

Hunter Shull pitched the final 2 2/3 to close out the win, scattering seven hits. 

Webb City will face Rock Bridge on Saturday afternoon at Willard.
