Lady Cards win over Monett 16-6

The Lady Cardinal softball ran their record to 2-0 on the young season with a 16-6 win over Monett on Thursday afternoon.

Peyton Hawkins led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run to left and ,before the inning was over, she also doubled in two more as the Cardinals batted around and opened a 7-0 lead after one inning.  Those were the only two hits of the inning, as they were helped by three walks and two errors as the first six batters all reached base and scored in the inning.

Monett answered with three runs in each of the second and third innings and had closed the gap to only trail 8-6 after their half of the third.  Webb City added two runs in the bottom of the inning on back to back rbi singles from Emma Welch and Hannah Wells, extending their lead to 10-6.

Putting the game away with six runs in the fourth, the Cardinals sent twelve to the plate.  After Shelby Gardner walked and Morgan Brannon singled to open the inning, Emalee Lamar lined a three run home run to left.  Ripley Shanks singled and Hawkins doubled one out later and Welch plated Shanks with a sacrifice fly.  Wells then homered to for the final two runs of the inning.

Hawkins finished a perfect 4-4 at the plate, scoring three times and driving in three.  Wells and Lamar each drove in three and every player scored at least once.  Shelbey Gardner reached base each time, drawing four walks.

Laney Taylor earned her second win of the year.  She allowed 6 runs on 11 hits, striking out one.

The Lady Cardinals compete in the Joplin Tournament tomorrow.
