Eight run fourth inning propels Cardinals to win

Eight run fourth inning propels Cardinals to win

An eight run explosion in the fourth inning lifted the Cardinals to an 12-2 conference opening win on Tuesday.

Webb City scored twice in the bottom of the first as Morgan Brannon and Hannah Wells each singled with one out.  Kaylyn Gilbert drove home Brannon with the first run and Wells scored when Lauren Hicks reached on an Eagle error.

The Eagles tied it up in top of the third before the Cardinals batted around in the fourth, scoring eight runs on seven hits.  Gilbert walked to lead off the inning and then went first to third on a sacrifice bunt from Hicks.  Ripley Shanks was hit by a pitch and Dawsyn Decker drove in the first run of the inning a squeeze bunt single.  Shelby Gardner walked to load the bases in front of Peyton Hawkins ground rule double that drove in two more runs.  Brannon walked to load the bases once again and Wells drilled a bases clearing double to the gap in right center.  Gilbert and Lauren Hicks each hit run scoring doubles to close the inning with Cardinals leading 10-2.

The game ended early when Brannon hustled a double, ripping the ball off the third basemans glove and moving up to third on a fly ball to right. Emalee Lamar drove her in with a single to left.  Lamar moved to third on an error and wild pitch and scored the game ending run when Giibert flied out to center.

Brannon, Wells and Gilbert each picked up two hits to lead the Cardinals attack.

Laney Taylor picked up the complete game win, allowing only two runs on six hits.  She struck out four, only walking one.

The Cardinals, now 6-2, travel to Ozark on Thursday.
