Maturino belts two HR's as Cardinals drop Nixa 3-1

Sophomore third baseman Alex Maturino blasted a pair of solo home runs to lead Webb City past Nixa 3-1 in Thursday's Central Ozark Conference matchup.

Webb City improved to 11-4 overall and 2-2 in the COC.

The Cardinals halted Nixa's seven-game win streak. The Eagles are now 8-4 overall and 2-2 in the COC.

Mylee Harper's RBI single gave Nixa a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but Webb City tied it up in the fourth on Maturino's home run to left field.

The Cardinals took a 2-1 lead in the fifth when Rylynn McFarland charged home from third after a Nixa throwing error.

Maturino homered to left again in the sixth to give the visitors a 3-1 cushion.

The Eagles threatened in the bottom of the seventh, but the Cardinals completed a game-ending double play, as Jensyn Pickett hauled in a fly ball in left and threw to first to double up the runner.

Webb City freshman Addie Burns earned the complete-game victory with a stellar outing in the circle. Burns gave up six hits.

Nixa's Paige Garetson took the loss, but allowed just two earned runs.

Webb City will compete at this weekend's Park Hill Tournament.
